Spine Service - Department of Orthopaedic Surgery

Spine surgery rotation for the Clinical School students - 3-4 weeks
Objectives to be achieved at the end of the rotation:
- a basic understanding of spinal anatomy
- be able to take a history and examine a patient with spinal pathology.
- Should have an understanding of common spinal pathologies and relevant investigations (imaging).
- Should understand the basic principles of treatment of common spinal disorders.
Activity plan during the rotation:
- Join Drs Diwan/Etherington in the operating theatre. (Monday and Tuesday). You will be required to learn the basics of wearing gloves and gowns and know about suture materials besides observing surgical procedures.
- Join Drs Diwan/Etherington in the out-patient clinic and take history and examine patients. (Wednesday and Thursday) You are required to present (history and examination) a minimum of one full patient at each out-patient clinic.
- Spend ½ a day with Spine Fellow in the injection room. (Wednesday afternoon)
- Spend ½ a day with our spinal physiotherapists and spinal rehab team at West Botany Street and spend some time in the MRI room. (Wednesday afternoon)
- You are required to attend our regular Friday morning meetings at the Jenny Short Seminar room at the Orthopaedic Research Institute (Level 2) at 8.30 am.
- You are required to present a twenty minute talk at our Friday meeting. (8.30 am) The topic will be decided by Drs. Diwan/Etherington.
- Tutorial on spinal anatomy/ imaging /general orthopaedics on Friday (afternoon).
