Job Description
The Fellow will be an integral member of the Spine Service that includes 3 surgeons, pain physician and a spinal physician, with
Physical therapists and a clinical psychologist. The Fellow is involved in all aspects of clinical and research activities. The program
will provide excellent hands-on exposure to spinal disorders in the clinic and in the operating room with a special emphasis on spinal
column reconstruction procedures, including total disc replacements. Minimally invasive spinal surgery, spinal infections form part of
this training.
We have state-of-the-art research facilities in the area of biomechanics, spinal computation, molecular and cellular biology.
The Fellow has a day and a half per week protected time for clinical and clinically applied basic research. There is no on-call.

About the Facility
The St George Hospital and St George Private are located in Kogarah, a southern suburb of Sydney. They offer a comprehensive
range of inpatient and community based health services including critical care, orthopaedic surgery, cancer care, women and
children's health, community health and medical imaging.
The hospitals are accredited principal teaching hospitals of the University of New South Wales and offer a designated medical
trauma service.
About the Supervisor
Dr Ashish Diwan MBBS, DipNB (Ortho), PhD (UNSW) specialises in surgery for degenerative disorders of the spine and in
spinal deformities (scoliosis and kyphosis). His expertise includes minimally invasive intradiscal treatments, microscopic spinal
decompression, spinal stabilisation using computer-aided-guidance, anterior and posterior surgery for adult spinal deformity.
Dr Diwan's research interests include the molecular regulation of fracture repair and intervertebral disc regeneration.
